NC State University will celebrate the Class of Spring 2026 at the University Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9. Among those crossing the stage is Tonya Henderson Gatling, this year’s selected student speaker. Earning a bachelor’s degree in leadership in the public sector, Tonya completes a journey that began at NC State more than three decades ago. 

A Journey Three Decades in the Making

Tonya first walked onto NC State’s campus in 1994 as an engineering major, throwing herself into student life while building the foundational skills in analytical thinking, problem-solving and disciplined work that would later define a successful, decades-long career in program and project management. But after four years of study, a growing sense of disconnect within her chosen field and the circumstances that followed, she made the difficult decision to step away from her degree and pursue her career full time.

What followed was thirty years of finding her footing, rising through the ranks and building a life rich with purpose, anchored by the network of family, friends and colleagues who believed in her at every turn. Over time, that journey began pointing her back toward something unfinished.

In 2024, Tonya returned to NC State with a clarity of purpose she had not felt as a student thirty years prior. Enrolling in the Leadership in the Public Sector program, and supported by academic advisor Dr. Lashica Waters and the program’s flexible online format, she was able to refine her leadership voice, sharpen her strategic mindset and deepen a lifelong commitment to service and impact, all while continuing to build on the career and life she had spent years creating.

Family: The Foundation of Resilience

At the center of Tonya’s story is family. Her husband, George Gatling II, a fellow NC State alumnus, has been her most steadfast supporter from the very beginning. The two met during Tonya’s freshman year in 1994, though they lost contact with each other for over 20 years, their paths crossed again leading to a beautiful marriage. Tonya credits George’s unwavering belief in her, encouraging her return to school thirty years later.

Tonya also carries deep gratitude for her mother, Vickie F. Henderson, whose strength and faith first set her on the path to NC State and instilled in her the courage to meet every challenge with determination. Her brother, Kevin Henderson, and her nephews, Kevari and Kevon Henderson, serve as daily inspiration, a constant reminder that her journey is not hers alone but a blueprint for those who will follow.

She is equally grateful for the steady presence of her aunts, Evelyn Alston and Wanda Eborn, whose strength and love have grounded Tonya, providing a constant foundation throughout her life.

Honoring Those Who Believed First

Tonya will forever carry the legacy of those she has lost. Her late father, Harden M. Henderson, and her late grandmother, her beloved “Mema” Mattie Fields, believed in her early and often, reminding her of her own strength long before she fully recognized it herself. Their voices, she says, have never left her.

“It’s never too late to get better.” are the words that have carried Tonya through every season of her journey. They are the message she hopes to leave with every graduate listening on commencement day.

Faith as the Strongest Anchor

If family is the foundation of Tonya’s resilience, faith is its cornerstone. Guided by her church family at Abundant Life Cathedral and the leadership of Bishop Stenneth Powell Sr. and Lady Beverly Powell, she has remained steadfast in the belief that she is called to win, not just for herself, but for others. She lives by two principles that have carried her through every season: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) and “It’s never too late to get better.” Both, she says, are as true today as they were in 1994.

More Than a Finish Line

When Tonya steps to the podium this May, she will represent far more than the completion of a degree. She embodies what it means to return to something unfinished, bringing with her greater wisdom, deeper purpose and the courage to see it through. Her message, she hints, will speak to resilience, the power of second chances and the truth that growth has no expiration date.

“Keep the faith. You only need a mustard seed’s worth to get you through. Turn ‘no’ into ‘on,’ and you’ll find your way to experiences greater than you could ever imagine.”

After a 26-year academic hiatus and a successful career in between, Tonya Henderson Gatling has risen to the challenge of finishing what she started, and will now receive her bachelor’s degree alongside her fellow graduates. For anyone who has ever wondered whether their window has closed, Tonya is a testament that your destiny is always yours for the taking, as long as you believe in yourself, your pack and your purpose.
